With the help of Lake Research Partners, the National Health Council undertook a first-of-its-kind study focusing solely on people living with chronic diseases and their family caregivers, with a goal of understanding patient needs when utilizing the insurance exchanges to purchase health plans. The results of the study were presented at a briefing for patient organizations on March 20, 2015.

Patients are thankful for the benefits created by the Affordable Care Act, but that they are hungry for more information to help them find the right plan that meets their health and budget needs. To review the latest patient protections and transparency requirements included as part of the 2016 Notice of Benefit and Payment Parameters and Letter to Issuers, three representatives from the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO), which is part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), presented at a March 20, 2015, briefing hosted by the NHC.

To understand how states are addressing the needs and concerns of people with chronic conditions, the National Health Council worked together with Avalere Health to develop state-by-state performance reports based on the NHC’s five principles for enhancing the exchanges.
