International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations
The International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations (IAPO) continues to grow in influence within the worldwide health care community. In May, IAPO hosted a unique, influential gathering of representatives from patient organizations and the World Health Organization (WHO). The meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, was held just prior to the WHO World Health Assembly and offered WHO representatives an introduction on how patients can be powerful allies in setting public policy. Patient representatives learned ways to work with the WHO representative from their respective country, and some held individual meetings with their WHO representative following the meeting.
The WHO director of chronic disease and health promotion, Dr. Fiona Adshead, led a discussion on the WHO’s Noncommunicable Disease Action Plan, and Dr. Sabine Kopp with the WHO Medicines Quality Assurance Program presented on counterfeit medicines, to name only two of the topics. The all-day meeting wrapped up with a brainstorming session on practical application of the information gained in the discussions.
NHC President Myrl Weinberg serves as chair of the IAPO Governing Board and attended the Board and committee meetings and Annual General Meeting in London in mid-May.
