About
the organization: Mental Health America,
formerly the National Mental Health Association, is the country's oldest and largest
nonprofit organization addressing all aspects of mental health and mental illness. With
more than 340 affiliates nationwide, Mental Health America works to improve the mental
health of all Americans, especially the 54 million individuals with mental disorders,
through advocacy, education, research and service.
Mental Health America was established in 1909 by former psychiatric patient Clifford W.
Beers. During his stays in public and private institutions, Beers witnessed and was
subjected to horrible abuse. From these experiences, Beers set into motion a reform
movement that took shape as the National Mental Health Association. Mental Health
America's work has resulted in positive change. We have educated millions about mental
illnesses and reduced barriers to treatment and services. As a result of our efforts, many
Americans with mental disorders have sought care and now enjoy fulfilling, productive
lives in their communities.
About the condition(s):
Mental illnesses include such disorders as schizophrenia,
schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder,
obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic and other severe anxiety disorders, autism and
pervasive developmental disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, borderline
personality disorder, and other severe and persistent mental illnesses that affect the
brain.
These disorders can profoundly disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, moods, ability to
relate to others and capacity for coping with the demands of life. Mental illnesses can
affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income. Mental illnesses are not the result
of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are
treatable. Most people with serious mental illness need medication to help control
symptoms, but also rely on supportive counseling, self-help groups, assistance with
housing, vocational rehabilitation, income assistance and other community services in
order to achieve their highest level of recovery. |
