In conjunction with the Vice President, Development & Fundraising and the strategic direction of the Foundation, the Director of Fundraising and Development's overall objective and responsibility is to provide strategic leadership and growth to the Foundation's development ventures which support research and education projects, advocacy and government relations and awareness.

As a member of the Development & Fundraising team, the position will lead, manage, develop, and expand programs that build and strengthen links to potential and existing volunteers and donors and increase the Foundation's revenue. Work with VP of Development to increase the revenue of assigned fundraising activities. Ensure that the fundraising and non-fundraising priorities of the LFA grow through increased corporate, individual, and volunteer support. Organize and manage appropriate committees with volunteers to expand fundraising programs.

The position will stay on top of market trends and determine ROI to ensure appropriate visibility for the Foundation and its partners in advancing the mission of the organization. The Director will work closely with the VP of Development & Fundraising, Marketing and other staff and leadership volunteers in support of building a donor centric organizational culture through targeted and innovative fundraising ventures.

Primary Responsibilities

Roles and responsibilities of the Director include, but are not limited to:

  • Support and maintain the vision, mission, priorities, and guiding principles of the Foundation.   Understand and serve as a key leader in implementing the strategic direction and purpose of the assigned campaigns.
  • Formulate, implement, and lead strategies and tactics for fundraising and development activities to sustain continued growth, maximum penetration of core market areas and opportunities for expansion where appropriate in key markets.
  • Lead and execute fundraising of major special events (NYC Gala, DC Gala, Advocacy Summit) in researching and securing non vested corporate sponsors and committees.
  • Support regional staff in development of special events.
  • Develop a portfolio of major individual prospects and donors for face to face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship in a geographic area.
  • Assist VP of Development and Director of Individual Campaigns in executing approach to elevate mid-level donors and other individual donor campaigns.
  • Work with VP of Development & finance to manage income and expenses associated with campaign initiatives and to develop comprehensive financial records and regular evaluations to revenue targets are achieved.
  • Employs best practices in campaign development and leverages Board and staff spheres of influence in the qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of Foundation relationships.
  • Ensures organizational compliance with ethical practices in fund solicitation as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the Lupus Foundation of America's key initiatives that drives the support of the mission.  Works across the organization to ensure Foundation mission is integrated throughout fundraising activities to ensure results are directly tied to volunteer engagement.
  • Perform other development-related duties as assigned by the VP of Development.

Position Requirements

  • An experienced fund-raising professional with a minimum 10 years of experience in successfully implementing fundraising campaigns and volunteer engagement with a proven track record of exceeding fundraising goals
  • Proven track record of implementation of new fundraising campaigns
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Ability to establish strong, collaborative relationships and the adaptability to work with a variety of personalities and leadership styles
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt interpersonal and communication style to interact effectively with a wide variety of people
  • Proven ability to work well in a fast paced and team-based environment
  • Self-starter and able to work independently and under pressure while managing multiple priorities, projects and deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with high-level attention to detail
  • High functioning with computer software and applications with a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office, donor tracking database programs, and fundraising software
  • Able to make, follow through and document accountability for short and long term plans
  • Able to work effectively with colleagues throughout the organization as well as external customers and vendors
  • Available for weekend and evening work
  • Ability to lift 35+ pounds
  • Willingness to travel 25-30% of time
