Getting to Know Bhriana Smith, Senior Coordinator, Communications

Following is a Q&A to get to know Bhriana Smith, Senior Coordinator, Communications, who began working at the National Health Council (NHC) in June 2023.

Putting Patients First (PPF) Blog: How did you first hear about the National Health Council and what made you want to become part of the NHC team?

After witnessing an egregious number of unfortunate, preventable health malpractices, I developed a deep interest in patient advocacy in health care, equal health access, and transparency in medical practices. I decided to pivot my career to the health advocacy space and upon researching I discovered the National Health Council (NHC). I was elated when I learned that the NHC’s mission comprises all facets of my career and personal aspirations, and I am honored to be able to further the organization’s mission.

PPF Blog: What are some of the tasks or other work you’ve done that will help you in this new role?

I come from the journalism, public relations, and strategic communications fields. Relaying accurate, timely, and transparent information to myriads of audiences is what I live to do. I also love engaging people, which I know will aid me when interacting with our member organizations and the public.

PFF Blog: In your role, you write communications and promotional materials daily. What specific area of focus are you interested in writing the most?

I am really interested in writing material that spreads awareness of low-cost cancer treatments, specifically with children (pediatric oncology). I am also excited to engage with and learn from family caregivers of those living with chronic illnesses. In my experience, this audience needs to know that they are supported and that there are resources that can help them be the most present for their loved ones.

PFF Blog: Tell us something about you personally. What do you like to do outside of work?

Read. I am an avid reader. My favorite authors are Immanuel Kant (I know he is a philosopher, but his works are amazing), Ayn Rand, and C.S. Lewis. I also love musicals — “Wicked,” “The Sound of Music,” and “Les Misérables” being my favorites — and am a bit of a history buff and world traveler. When I am not working, you might be able to find me on Broadway in New York, inside of a Barnes and Noble, at the airport, or in a museum.
