Care Services is one of the three mission areas of the ALS Association. (The other two are research and advocacy).  We have the privilege of working with 15,000 people living with ALS across the United States through a network of 39 affiliated chapters, over 130 clinical partners, and other like-minded organizations.  We facilitate cross-department deliverables at the national office and strive to continually identify needs of our communities to offer programs and materials to address those needs. In addition, we help ensure high quality educational opportunities for providers serving people with ALS.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Care Services, the Associate Director, Education & Professional Development Programs will focus on planning and implementing information and education strategies for key stakeholders both internal and external to The Association. Based in Washington, D.C., the successful candidate ensures requirements are identified and develops, manages and monitors programs and events. 

Core duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Works with chapters and other key stakeholders in identifying needs, gaps and areas of improvement for educational programs and associated collateral materials.
  • Identify alternative models for developing and implementing educational opportunities, including the scope, goals and deliverables. This will include new initiatives to support the strategic direction of the Association.
  • Acts as a liaison to other departments and chapters regarding continuing education requirements and inquiries.
  • Develops a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of programs and to identify areas for improvement.
  • Researches and oversees the design of educational materials and instructional methods.
  • Formulates and recommends programs, goals and objectives for education programs including new initiatives to support the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Leads the Care Services team with the development of internal and external education programs for continuing education and professional development needs and requirements.
  • Plans, develops, manages and evaluates special-topic education programs.
  • Develops and effectively manages program timelines to ensure timely completion of program deliverables.
  • Ensures that required components of education programs meet the standards to satisfy the requirements for continuing education units (CEUs) whenever possible.
  • Manages and evaluates vendors and consultants as they relate to continuing education services.
  • Develops and implements strategies that will maximize the synergies among program areas.
  • Identifies and develops beneficial programmatic partnerships with other individuals, organizations, and institutions that will strengthen The Association’s ability to fulfill its mission.
  • Implements a balanced score card and program dashboard; establishes consistent, objective program performance standards of accountability.
  • Assists the team in reviewing, evaluating and reporting on continuing education programs.
  • Develops programs and monitors systems to support advanced educational platforms and program quality, including special topic education programs, onsite training, web sites, webinars, apps, videos, symposiums to internal and external audiences.
  • Work with subject matter experts in the fields of symptom management, children’s’ programs, research, development, professional designations, and member organizations to maintain ‘best’ practice in Association programs.
  • Develops and implements short-term and long-term goals and objectives to achieve the successful outcome of the programs. Develops program evaluation frameworks to assess the strengths of programs and to identify areas for improvement. Proactively recommend revisions to programs as indicated by information received, strategic initiatives and required deliverables. Present reports to leadership team that define project progress, problems and solutions.
  • Develops an annual budget and operating plan to support the programs.
  • Develops funding proposals for programs to ensure the continuous delivery of services.
  • Manage the care services library portal, identify options for efficiencies, recommend and implement solutions to issues identified.
  • Convey a professional and positive image at all times that reflects favorably on The ALS Association.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:                                             

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, health administration or closely related field.  Master's degree in education/administration, Health Administration, Public Health or related field preferred.
  • Three to five years’ progressive professional responsibility for administration of education or operational programs.
  • Three to five years’ experience in administration of continuing education programs and meeting activities; prior association or nonprofit experience.
  • Operations and program development across disciplines; collaborations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  • Demonstrates accountability by doing more than is minimally required to get the job done.
  • Demonstrated ability to make good decisions; exhibits sound and accurate judgment; supports and explains reasoning for decisions; includes appropriate people in decision making process; makes timely decisions. Takes the initiative to get things done; accepts responsibility for own actions.
  • Ability to travel as required or requested for Association business.
